4 Ways To Protect Your Silver
As any owner of precious metals would know, sterling silver does tarnish. Luckily, there are ways to delay this process and keep it shining longer.
Keep Your Jewelry Dry
Water and moisture will tarnish silver before you can even blink an eye. Make sure to take off any rings when washing your hands- or if you do, just be sure to dry off very well! Avoid wearing your jewelry in the shower, bath, hot tub, swimming pool, hot springs, etc. Also, when storing silver jewelry, try placing some moisture absorbing packets in your jewelry boxes to prevent any moisture that could ruin that shine. Plus, they only need to be switched out a few times a year.
Avoid Acidic Liquids
Certain foods and/or juices will eat away at sterling silver as well as tarnish it. Lemon juice, vinegar, orange juice, egg, grapefruit and pineapple juice, coffee, and more. If your jewelry comes in contact with any of these, be sure to wipe off any remnants as soon as possible to prevent damage.
Side Tip: Some lotions and perfumes contain chemicals that can cause your silver to tarnish. Apply any lotion and perfume before you begin accessorizing.
Keep Your Silver With Your Silver
Some of us may have a bad habit of throwing all our jewelry in one place. Consequently, this has shown to not always be the best for all metals. Some fabrics such as wool will cause a chemical reaction with the silver, this is why it is best to have velvet, cotton, or soft lined jewelry boxes. Also, avoid storing silver with stainless steel or aluminum, these will cause the sterling silver to tarnish.
Use It Or Lose It
One of the best ways to prevent your silver from tarnishing is simply by wearing it frequently. Don't let that beautiful necklace sit in your jewelry box for months, wear it for a night out- or even in!
