Why We Choose to Handcraft Our Jewelry in Taxco, Mexico
By Laura Renata Rubio, Founder and Designer of Renata Rubio
Where jewelry is made matters.
So do the people who make it, the conditions under which it is created, and the traditions a purchase helps sustain.
Since founding Renata Rubio in 1996, I have chosen to have our jewelry handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico. I could have pursued lower-cost, high-volume production elsewhere. Instead, I chose to build lasting relationships with artisan families whose knowledge of silver has been developed and passed down through generations.
That decision defines our jewelry and the values behind our brand.
Taxco Is More Than a Place of Production
Taxco is internationally recognized for its silversmithing tradition. Throughout the city, generations of artisans have learned how to shape, solder, oxidize, polish, and finish silver by hand.
These skills are not acquired quickly. They require patience, precision, and years of practice.
For many artisan families, silversmithing is more than an occupation. It is part of their identity and cultural heritage. Techniques are often taught from one generation to the next, allowing knowledge developed over decades to remain alive.
When our jewelry is handcrafted in Taxco, it becomes part of that continuing tradition.
We Work With Artisan Families, Not Anonymous Production Lines
For 30 years, I have worked alongside artisan families in Taxco to create Renata Rubio jewelry.
These are not anonymous suppliers selected through a catalog. They are people I know and relationships that have grown over many years. We have developed collections together, solved design challenges together, and watched the next generation learn the craft.
That history creates a level of trust and collaboration that cannot be duplicated through impersonal, high-volume sourcing.
The artisans understand my designs, my expectations, and the importance I place on quality. I understand the time, knowledge, and human effort required to transform an idea into a finished piece of jewelry.
Our work is built on mutual respect.
Exceptional Craftsmanship Cannot Be Rushed
Handcrafting sterling silver jewelry is a detailed process.
Depending on the design, a piece may require casting, cutting, forming, soldering, stone setting, oxidation, polishing, and careful finishing. At every stage, the artisan must understand how silver responds to heat, pressure, tools, and movement.
Machines can reproduce a shape quickly. They cannot replace the judgment of an experienced silversmith who knows when a curve is balanced, when a solder joint is secure, or when a surface has been polished correctly.
That human judgment is one of the reasons handcrafted jewelry feels different.
Slight variations may reveal the work of the individual who made the piece. They are reminders that the jewelry passed through skilled hands rather than an automated production line.
Solid Sterling Silver Is Worth Working With
Our jewelry is made from solid .925 sterling silver, not a thin silver coating over an inexpensive base metal.
Sterling silver is durable, valuable, and capable of lasting for decades when properly cared for. It can be polished, repaired, and restored instead of discarded when its surface changes with wear.
Working with solid sterling silver also allows artisans to create substantial pieces with depth, texture, and dimension. The material supports the sculptural quality that has become a defining characteristic of many Renata Rubio designs.
We choose a lasting material because we believe meaningful jewelry should be made to last.
Preserving Tradition Requires Continuing to Practice It
Craft traditions do not survive simply because people admire them.
They survive when artisans have opportunities to continue practicing their skills, earning a livelihood, teaching others, and creating work that remains relevant to contemporary customers.
Every collection we produce in Taxco helps sustain demand for exceptional silversmithing. It gives traditional knowledge a place in the present rather than allowing it to become only a memory of the past.
Preserving tradition does not mean repeating the same designs forever. It means respecting time-honored skills while using them to create jewelry for the lives people lead today.
That balance between tradition and contemporary design has guided my work from the beginning.
The Conditions Behind a Product Matter
Over the past 30 years, I have seen customers become increasingly interested in the origins of what they buy.
They want to know:
Where was it made?
Who made it?
What materials were used?
Under what conditions was it created?
Does the purchase support or suppress traditional craftsmanship?
These are important questions.
A piece of jewelry has a history before it becomes part of the wearer's story. It begins with materials, labor, business decisions, and people whose work is often invisible by the time the finished piece reaches a store.
I believe customers deserve to know that story.
Transparency creates a more meaningful connection between the person who makes an object and the person who eventually wears it.
We Choose Craftsmanship Over Mass Production
I could choose to manufacture our jewelry through lower-cost, high-volume production. It might make certain parts of the business faster or less expensive.
But the easiest manufacturing decision is not always the right decision.
I choose Taxco because I value exceptional craftsmanship. I choose it because I believe artisan knowledge deserves to be respected and supported. I choose it because the people behind the jewelry matter as much as the finished design.
This is not a rejection of modern technology or global production. It is a deliberate choice about what Renata Rubio stands for.
We do not want to create disposable jewelry designed to follow a temporary trend.
We want to create lasting jewelry with integrity, identity, and a meaningful connection to the hands that made it.
Doing Well by Doing Good
I believe we are all connected by a mutual desire to do well by doing good.
A business must be financially sustainable. It must also understand the effect its decisions have on people, communities, and traditions.
For Renata Rubio, doing good means building respectful, long-term partnerships. It means valuing skilled labor. It means creating jewelry from durable materials and standing behind it with a Lifetime Warranty.
It also means recognizing that growth should not come at the expense of the craftsmanship that made the brand possible.
Success is more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others and helps preserve something worth carrying forward.
What This Choice Means for the Person Wearing It
When you choose a piece of Renata Rubio jewelry, you receive more than a sterling silver object.
You receive a piece shaped by an experienced artisan.
You support families who have dedicated their lives to mastering a remarkable craft.
You help sustain a tradition that continues because people still recognize its value.
And you wear jewelry with a clear origin, a human story, and a connection to one of the world's great silversmithing communities.
That story becomes part of your story.
Jewelry With a Past and a Future
For 30 years, my work has been shaped by the people and traditions of Taxco.
The relationships we have built, the techniques the artisans have preserved, and the jewelry we have created together have reinforced one lesson again and again:
How something is made matters.
It matters to the people who create it.
It matters to the person who chooses it.
And it matters to the future of the traditions we hope will endure.
That is why we continue to handcraft our jewelry in Taxco, Mexico.
Not because it is the easiest path.
Because it is the path that gives our jewelry its craftsmanship, its integrity, and its meaning.
This philosophy has shaped my work for 30 years and is one of the most important lessons I have learned as a jewelry designer. Read What I've Learned in 30 Years as a Jewelry Designer.
